Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I just show up to present my research and leave?

A: No. The Capstone conference is a full day of presentations and events! The awards for best student projects and presentations will be given at the closing ceremony, so you must be there to collect your certificate.

Q: How do the parallel sessions work?

A: Parallel sessions are blocks of time for presentations (in Science) and prototype displays and activities (in Applied Science). For some parallel sessions, you need to be in a place to present etc. If you are not needed, you should go to other presentations or the applied science events.

Q: How do I get ready for my presentation?

A: Go to the room you are presenting in 15 minutes before the start of time slot (e.g. for Parallel session B, 10:30 for 10:45 start). The moderators will help you to set up your presentation. You should stay in the room for the whole time slot. If you’re not presenting during a parallel session, you can go to other presentations or visit the applied science displays.

Q: How do we set up and pack up our dryers?

A: You’ll be able to set up the dryers in the Vantage lounge during registration at 8:30am. After the dryer competition, the room will be locked during the final evaluation and ceremony. After the final photo, you can pack up your dryer.

Q: Can I go to other streams’ presentations?

A: Definitely! If there are seats free for a science presentation or room to walk around applied science displays, then we encourage you to!

Q: What is the dress code?

A: A conference is a professional event so wear something that makes you feel confident and professional. Remember it might be hot so dress for the weather!

Q: Can I invite friends outside Vantage college to come to my presentation?

A: Unfortunately, no. Due to limited space, only Vantage College Students and Faculty members will be allowed in the presentation rooms.

Q: Will food be provided?

A: Yes! Lunch will be provided for all student presenters. There will be vegan and vegetarian options provided.

Q: What social activities are there?

A: There will be a Dryers competition designed by applied science students and other activities! For more information, check out the posters on our main page. There will be prizes available!

Q: Where do I get my name tag if I’m late?

A: You can get it at the Vantage Office front desk, located on the second floor of Orchard Commons.

Q: Who can I ask for help?

A: You can reach out for help to staff and Capstone Student Committee members, who will have their names in red on the name tags. During the presentation sessions, you can ask the moderators or your instructors. Alternatively, you can come to the Vantage Office front desk located on the second floor of Orchard Commons.

Q: I lost my name tag; can I get a new one?

A: No. Nametags will be only given on the first day of the conference. It is your responsibility to take care of it during the two conference days. At the end of the conference, you will be required to drop off your nametag in a box which will be located at the Vantage Office front desk.
